Catch all of the Bass Pro Action in Edenton!

Edenton’s prime location on the Albemarle Sound has always drawn outdoor enthusiasts and fishermen, but this week, Edenton’s Chowan River has taken center stage as professional anglers compete in Stage Five of Major League Fishing’s 2024 Bass Pro Tour.

For the past several weeks, dozens of professional fishermen have been scouting the local waterways and tributaries to learn the mysteries that hide beneath these watery depths and determine which locations may yield a prize-winning fish.

Most of them have never fished these waters before, so this new territory has provided unexpected challenges and exciting discoveries.

It’s been a busy time leading up to the U.S. Air Force Stage Five presented by WIX Filters, held June 4th through June 9th here in Edenton, and both local residents and visitors can sense the anticipation in the air!

The Chowan River was first explored by English seafarers sent by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 1500s. They named it after the Chowanoc natives who lived along its banks.

It’s a unique blackwater river water system, stretching 50 miles from the Albemarle Sound into the lower southeastern part of Virginia.

Populated with catfish, herring, and largemouth bass, the Chowan River is well known for its fisheries, dating all the way back to colonial times.

The river flows through vast swamplands, teeming with cypress and gum trees and hiding an abundance of wildlife including rattlesnakes, deer, coyotes, nutria, and bald eagles.

It’s no wonder nature enthusiasts, fishermen, bird watchers, and more flock to Edenton’s Chowan River year-round to explore its abundant wildlife!

This week’s fishing tournament has already seen some impressive catches, but the week is not over. You can still catch a lot of the action before Bass Pro Tour’s prize-winning culmination.

Toward the end of the tournament, locals and visitors can enjoy watching the events unfold live on MLFNOW! big screens at Colonial Waterfront Park in Edenton.

This special MLF Fan Experience will be held June 8th and 9th with Watch Parties at 1:00 p.m. and Trophy Ceremonies at 4:30 p.m.

In addition, the Town of Edenton, Chowan County Tourism Development Authority, and Harbor Towns Cruises will host free food, live music, a fishing derby, and hourly giveaways.

Kids can meet Paw Patrol’s Skye and Marshall, get autographs from the finalists, and cheer on the top ten anglers. Plus, the first 50 kids 14 and under will get a free rod and reel each day following the Trophy Ceremonies.

If you’re not able to attend these live events in Edenton, you can keep up with the action through MLFNOW! streaming on, the MLF app, or the My Outdoor TV app.

If you’ve never explored or experienced the Chowan River for yourself, the Bass Pro Tour is the perfect opportunity for you to get introduced to the region and the wealth of nature opportunities that Edenton and Chowan County have to offer.

From its vast waterways to its lush forests, this region is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers an abundance of recreational opportunities for anyone looking to get outside and enjoy nature.
