We invite you to join us in Edenton this October as we celebrate Wings Over Edenton at the Northeastern Regional Airport!
Many people don’t know about Edenton’s airport, but it’s actually been an important part of our community for over 80 years.
The airport was established in the 1940s as a Marine Air Corps Station and became a strategic training facility where Marine fighter squadrons would train before being deployed overseas during World War II.
After World War II, it became a naval auxiliary air station and was then used as an outlying field for MCAS Cherry Point, NC.
Since those days, the airport has reinvented itself as a transportation and shipping hub, becoming the sixth largest freight-hauling airport in North Carolina.
The Town of Edenton, along with a dedicated local committee, has planned a day of festivities on October 19, 2024, to honor the airport’s history and celebrate its ongoing significance to our community.
Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a day packed full of activities, including:
- An all-day car and tractor show
- A variety of food trucks and local vendors, plus exclusive airshow hats for sale
- An exciting air show featuring parachutists, a Pitts Special, and T-6 Texan aircraft
- Face painting and free airplane rides for children
- Helicopter and plane rides for adults
- A STEM trailer from ECSU with a flight simulator
- An array of planes on display, and more!
The main attraction will be the aerobatic performances by the Pitts Special and T-6 Texan aircraft, piloted by experts from the Hampton Roads area.
The Pitts Special, which first flew in 1944, gained fame through its success in aerobatic competitions around the world.
The T-6 Texan, a key training aircraft during World War II, was used by the U.S., Canada, and the British Commonwealth and remained in service into the 1970s.
The airshow will be the highlight of a fun-filled, activity-packed day that celebrates the impact of the airport in Edenton’s history and community!
You won’t want to miss this free event in Edenton. Gates will open at 10 a.m., and the air show will start at 1 p.m.
