There is a specific moment in April when Edenton truly earns its reputation as the “Prettiest Small Town in the South.” The air carries a hint of a breeze from the Albmarle Sound, the azaleas reach their peak vibrance, and spring comes to life in gardens all over Edenton.
This year, in April, the town’s historic gardens become a backdrop for Easels in the Gardens, which returns April 17–18, 2026.
The Heart of the Heritage: The Cupola House Association
At the center of this celebration is the Cupola House Association, the stewards of Edenton’s iconic landmark, the Cupola house. As a non-profit organization, the Association does the vital work of preserving the 1758 Cupola House, a National Historic Landmark, along with its colonial-revival gardens.
When you purchase a ticket to Easels in the Gardens, you support the ongoing conservation of this architectural treasure at the heart of Edenton. So, I want to invite you to come ring in the spring with Easels in the Gardens.
A Living Art Gallery
Throughout the two-day event, plein air artists take up residence in various gardens across town. You’ll have the opportunity to watch them translate the dappled light, beautiful vistas, and historic landscapes of Edenton onto canvas in real time.
The self-guided tour leads you through a curated selection of Edenton’s finest private and public gardens. From the stately history of the Cupola House to the private gardens of downtown homes, each stop offers a new perspective on the town’s gardens in peak springtime bloom.
Art in Bloom & The Garden Party
The weekend is full of sensory delights beyond the paintbrush:
- Art in Bloom: an exhibit at the Chowan Arts Council featuring 12 original works of art, each illustrated by a unique floral arrangement
- The Garden Party & Art Sale: The festivities culminate in a Garden Party. Mingle with the artists and painters, enjoy the hospitality of the Cupola House, and even purchase the works created during the weekend.
Make it a Weekend in Edenton.
While the gardens are the main attraction, the entire town of Edenton will be open for business.
Stay in one of our Airbnb or vacation rentals, visit other historic sites like the 1767 Courthouse, and grab food at one of the many locally owned places to eat in Edenton.
Whether you are an avid gardener, an art collector, or simply someone looking for a peaceful springtime escape, “Easels in the Gardens” is the perfect time for a springtime visit.
