As winter melts away and the first signs of spring start to bloom, Edenton comes alive with color and life.
Located on the Albemarle Sound, this charming Southern town is known for its picturesque landscape and friendly local community.
There’s something special about springtime in Edenton that appeals to residents and visitors alike with its lively downtown, special springtime events, and variety of outdoor activities.
One of the first things you’ll notice in Edenton during the spring is the explosion of colorful flowers. From daffodils and tulips to azaleas and dogwoods, the town is transformed into a rainbow of hues.
Known as the “Prettiest Small Town in the South,” Edenton is particularly stunning during this time of year, with its tree-lined streets and manicured gardens bursting with blooms.
One special springtime weekend in April is The Pilgrimage Tour of Historic Private Homes & Sites, hosted by the GFWC Edenton Woman’s Club and held this year on April 11th and 12th.
This popular biennial, self-guided tour through the heart of historic downtown Edenton offers visitors a glimpse into some of the most stunning private homes and gardens, highlighting prime examples of architecture spanning two centuries.
Visitors are guided by docents, dressed in period costumes, who explain each home’s historical and architectural significance.
This year’s tour features two of Edenton’s grandest estates, Wessington and Hayes Farm.
The grand Wessington, a magnificent antebellum residence built in 1850, is a three-story home listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Hayes Farm, the countryside estate of North Carolina’s fourth governor, Samuel Johnston, was built in the late 18th century on the shores of the Albemarle Sound.
The current house was completed in 1817 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. It has been called “one of the South’s most accomplished examples of a five-part Palladian villa.”
Both homes feature unique architecture, historic details, and expansive spring gardens full of beautiful blooms!
But it’s not just the flowers that make spring in Edenton so special. The mild temperatures and longer days also bring a flurry of outdoor activities for both locals and visitors to enjoy.
During this same weekend, a festive street party in downtown Edenton, Boogie on Broad, brings the community together with lively music, fun dancing, and food trucks.
During spring, you’ll find lots of people enjoying the warmer weather outdoors!
Whether it’s a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, a picnic in one of the town’s many parks, or a round of golf at one of the area’s top-notch courses, there’s no shortage of ways to soak up the spring sunshine in Edenton.
Equally inviting is Edenton’s bustling downtown. You’ll find lots of people enjoying shopping, dining, and strolling along its brick sidewalks.
Downtown parks are full of children playing and people taking in the spectacular water and sunset views.
And with the warm weather and sunny skies, there’s no better time to take a leisurely stroll through the historic districts and soak up the rich history of Edenton.
From the Roanoke River Lighthouse to the Cupola House and Penelope Barker House Welcome Center, there’s no shortage of history to explore in this historic location.
You can enjoy a relaxing and educational Trolley Tour through Edenton’s most iconic historic streets, or you can opt to explore Edenton’s history on your own by following the Museum Trail.
