Edenton Itineraries for Every Visitor

If you’re thinking about visiting or relocating to Edenton, we’ve got a range of interesting itineraries that can help you discover “The South’s Prettiest Small Town” on the Albemarle Sound!

We’ve got an itinerary for every type of visitor. Here are our Top Three:

#1. The Nature Lovers Itinerary

Are you into biking, kayaking, golfing, bird-watching, fishing, or boating? How about running, hiking, or exploring in the great outdoors? If you answered yes to any of these, then Edenton’s a great place to visit and experience the beautiful and bountiful nature along the Albemarle Sound.

Start your outdoor adventure at Colonial Waterfront Park where you can watch the boats or birds and try your hand at fishing along the pier.

You can also rent kayaks here and set off to explore Pembroke and Queen Anne’s Creeks. Or hop aboard the Liber-Tea for a gorgeous sunset cruise!

If golfing is your passion, visit The Links at Mulberry Hill or nearby Occano for an afternoon of golf with spectacular water views of the Albemarle Sound. You may even spot some dolphins!

Round out your time by visiting one of our nature centers or parks. The NC Fishery, Bennett’s Millpond, and Hendrix Park and Cannon’s River Ferry Walk all offer unique ways to explore the natural wildlife of this coastal region.

End your day by witnessing one of Edenton’s best natural phenomenon – a gorgeous sunset over the waters of the Albemarle Sound – best witnessed from “Edenton’s Front Porch” at the Penelope Barker House or while feasting on fresh seafood at Edenton Bay Oyster Bar.

#2. The History Buff’s Itinerary

Edenton is brimming with history, dating back to colonial times when it served as the state’s first colonial capital.

Start your exploration at NC Historic Edenton State Historic Site where you’ll find an informative short video about Edenton’s past and a variety of tour options at the Visitor’s Center.

Helpful guides can accompany you on walking tours through Edenton’s historic downtown, visiting sites such as St. Paul’s, the James Iredell House, and the Cupola House and gardens.

If you’d rather sit back and relax while learning about Edenton’s history, head to the Penelope Barker House Welcome Center where you can buy tickets for the Edenton Trolley Tour.

You’ll step back in time while stopping by iconic buildings such as the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse and the 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse.

At the Penelope Barker Welcome Center you’ll also have the option to buy tickets to board the Liber-Tea for an unbeatable, waterfront view of some of Edenton’s Victorian mansions lining Edenton Bay while hearing tales of pirates and adventurers who left their stamp on Edenton’s past.

Finally, take some time to meander and explore the downtown on your own. Follow the markers for a self-guided walking tour that will highlight some of Edenton’s famous historical figures and buildings.

Along the way, you’ll find shaded residential avenues, benches where you can rest and soak in the waterfront views, and sweet shops where you can pick up snacks or stop to eat.

#3. The Family Friendly Itinerary

Edenton is a one-stop destination for a fun-filled family getaway! We’ve got plenty of activities and venues that will cater to the whole family.

You can check out our Calendar of Events to make sure that you don’t miss out on fun activities such as one of our annual downtown parades or block parties. There’s always something going on that is family-friendly.

If your little ones need to burn some energy, head to the Colonial Waterfront Park where you’ll find a playground for kids and plenty of picnic tables. Make sure to visit the nearby Trolley on the Waterfront by Herringbone Restaurant to pick up refreshing drinks and treats.

Right across the street from the park you’ll find The Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library where kids can curl up on a beanbag with a new book or take part in special events such as Children’s Storytime and Teen Escape Rooms.

Next door is the Chowan Arts Council which is where you’ll find Fearless Kids Art. Kids and adults can paint and create to their hearts’ content in this cozy, welcoming space!

End your day taking in a movie at the Taylor Theater, an historic two-screen movie house where the popcorn is always fresh and the prices are reasonable for the whole family.
