One of the Best Spring Weekends to Visit Edenton

Spring is a beautiful time of year to visit Edenton, North Carolina!

The flowers are blooming, the weather is warming up, and there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy in this charming town. April is the perfect month to get away, book a room at one of our historic Bed & Breakfasts, and enjoy a spring break trip!

If you’re looking for the perfect time to plan a weekend getaway to Edenton, we highly recommend visiting this April during one of the best spring weekends of the year, April 26th & 27th.

This special weekend includes a variety of family-friendly events that celebrate Edenton’s historic heritage, welcoming community, and beautiful outdoor location on the Albemarle Sound.

During this weekend, the Cupola House Association hosts Easels in the Gardens, a two-day biennial event featuring ten private gardens and four public gardens. A special feature during this year’s Easels in the Gardens is the addition of Hayes Farm, Edenton’s newest historic site.

Though it is currently undergoing extensive renovations, with the goal of opening the entire estate to the public, visitors will have the unique opportunity to see the Hayes Farm historic gardens, featuring towering camellia and boxwoods, a large perennial flower bed, and a heart-shaped front bed lined with heirloom roses.

Visitors will also get to see the impressive large pillared house, built in 1817 and once the home of Samuel Johnston, North Carolina’s fourth governor. The home boasts stunning views of the Albemarle Sound and has been called “one of the South’s most accomplished examples of a five-part Palladian villa.”

During Easels in the Gardens, talented plein-air artists will be located throughout the gardens, and visitors can watch them capture the beauty and essence of Edenton’s springtime blooms.

The Chowan Arts Council will host a gallery exhibit called “Arts in Bloom,” featuring 12 original works of art illustrating unique floral arrangements.

This two-day special weekend will culminate with a Grand Finale Garden Party and Art Sale in the historic Cupola House Gardens.

Tickets for this weekend can be purchased here with advanced ticket pricing available through April 25th.

While you’re in town for Easels in the Gardens, there are other events and opportunities you can enjoy. One of our favorite local annual traditions, kicking off this same weekend, is Boogie on Broad, a free event presented by Destination Downtown Edenton and Visit Edenton.

This festive street party is part of Edenton’s Sounds of Summer Concert Series and will happen on Friday, April 26th, featuring The Adrian Duke Project

The Sounds of Summer Concert Series is a celebration of live music and the Edenton community, bringing locals and visitors together for four sensational evenings of live music, family-friendly dancing, and delicious food and beverage options.

So, plan to join the community, enjoy the entertainment, and boogie to the music during Boogie on Broad!

In addition to these events, the Friends of Historic Edenton State Historic Site will be hosting flower pressing workshops at the 1800/1827 James Iredell House & Dependencies. These one-hour workshops will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday during Easels in the Gardens.

You can also purchase a picnic box lunch at the James Iredell House, which is next door to the Historic Edenton State Historic Site Visitor’s Center. Knowledgeable docents will be on-hand to share the history of the Iredell family. Picnic box lunches will be available for purchase on both Friday and Saturday.

To round out your weekend, you can stop by the Edenton Farmers Market for a delicious treat or hand-made local art on Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or you can explore Edenton’s history by taking a ride on our Trolley Tour or walking our Museum Trail

As you can see, April 26th & 27th is a special weekend in Edenton that you won’t want to miss, jam packed with a variety of events for the whole family!

So, don’t wait to book a room at one of our beautiful B&Bs and to purchase tickets to Easels in the Gardens. This special weekend is very popular and sells out quickly! We hope you will plan to join us in celebrating Edenton’s unique history, culture, and community this spring.
